Five Figurines, written by Stephen Okonkwo, directed and co-produced by Akay Mason, produced by Becca Ashang, and executive produced by Eno Enoch Eje, hits cinemas this November. The film launches Element 24 Media, owned by Akay Mason, in collaboration with Stage 73 Media, owned by Eno Enoch Eje and Ogechi Nkaisi Onuoha. Cinemax will distribute the film.
In a recent interview with OYA Magazine, Akay described Five Figurines as a collaborative effort, from writing and assembling the cast and crew through pre-production, production, and post-production. He said everyone involved was right for the story and stayed for it.
The film follows a mother searching for the truth after her son, Innocent, dies mysteriously. Five Figurines is a revenge film about impunity and the class divide. Five people are at the heart of her search. Their lives look glamorous and flawless from the outside, but beneath the surface lie ambition, romance, jealousy, and deceit. As Innocent’s mother closes in, their facades begin to break.
Following Elevator Baby, Day of Destiny and Superstar, Five Figurines is the film Mason says is most fully his own. He calls it “a billion per cent” an Akay Mason film from the first frame to the last, and says he is proud of it. He credits his producer, who had “insane faith” in him, with giving him freedom to realise his vision.
The cast includes Ini Edo, Ireti Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, Odunlade Adekola, Uche Montana, Mike Ezuruonye, Wumi Toriola, Clinton Joshua Ezewele, Chimezie Imo, Chinyere Wilfred, Chuks Joseph, and Gbubemi Ejeye, among others.
The film also marks Mason’s first film as producer-director under Element 24 Media. Emmanuel Igbekele Odihiri serves as director of photography, Chris Udomi as production designer, and Habib Adebayo Olaore handles sound. The crew also includes Adewunmi Ismail Olumide as gaffer, Lateef Adeniji as key grip, Ace Classiq as first assistant director, and Dolapo Adigun Gabrielle Johnson as post-production supervisor.
