Nollywood filmmaker Editi Effiong has confirmed that a sequel to his global Netflix hit The Black Book is officially in development. The director shared details about the project on his X (formerly Twitter) account this weekend, revealing that the follow-up will be titled The Black Book: Old Scores.
Effiong disclosed that he and co-writer Bunmi Ajakaiye have spent over two years developing the script, which he described as his “favourite script” and a “historic production.” He has also brought on Nicky Weinstock, a producer associated with the Apple TV+ series Severance, as a producing partner on the project.
“We have raised unprecedented capital for the production of this historic production,” Effiong wrote, adding that he is “excited” for audiences to experience Old Scores.
Richard Mofe-Damijo will reprise his role as Paul Edima, the anti-hero at the centre of the first film. The sequel will also introduce new characters from Nigeria, the UK, the US, and Japan. A crew of approximately 300 Nigerian and international professionals is attached to the production.
The Black Book premiered on Netflix in September 2023 to widespread acclaim for its portrayal of corruption and justice in Nigeria. It reached the Top 10 on Netflix’s global charts in over 69 countries, peaking at No. 3 worldwide.
