Nigerian animator and character designer Uzoma Dunkwu has received an International Excellence in Animation Award from the United States Mission in Nigeria, recognising his achievements in animation and his contributions to creative collaboration between Nigeria and the United States.
The certificate recognises Dunkwu as a Primetime Emmy Award-winning animator and character designer for Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda, citing his historic artistic achievements and leadership in expanding cross-Atlantic creative collaboration.
Dunkwu shared news of the recognition on social media on October 3, describing it as a “much-needed recognition for Nigerian talents in Animation” and “an explosive encouragement for the animation industry in Nigeria.”
In August 2026, the Television Academy announced Dunkwu as a juried Emmy winner in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for character design on the Eyes of Wakanda episode “Into the Lion’s Den.”
Dunkwu joined Eyes of Wakanda in August 2021 as an early concept artist. According to his portfolio, he worked on initial character ideation and early designs for five Dora Milaje characters, including Noni, before refining Noni and contributing designs across all four episodes.
Following his Emmy recognition, Dunkwu dedicated the achievement to emerging artists in Nigeria and across the Global South, describing the win as evidence that Nigerian creatives can compete globally.

The new U.S. Mission award builds on that recognition.
With Eyes of Wakanda, Dunkwu contributed to a production centred in Wakanda, a fictional African nation whose history, characters, and visual identity are central to the Marvel Universe. His involvement therefore placed a Nigerian artist within the creative process of one of the world’s most recognisable entertainment franchises.
For Dunkwu, this latest honour adds another milestone to his international career. For the Nigerian animation industry, it offers further evidence that the country’s creative talent is increasingly participating in global storytelling, not only as an audience but as part of the teams creating the work.
