Lola Shoneyin’s 2010 bestselling novel, ‘The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives’, will be released in cinemas globally this December. Produced by EbonyLife Films, the novel’s debut screen adaptation is a collaboration between EbonyLife Group, Genesis Group, Nile Media Entertainment Group, and Silverbird Group.
The film follows Baba Segi, his four wives, and seven children as a secret unravels. The story explores power, patriarchy, and survival.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi and scripted by Adze Ugah, the film is produced by Heidi Uys, Chris Odeh, Mimi Bartels, and Lola Shoneyin. Executive producers include Mo Abudu, Nnaeto Orazulike, Moses Babatope, and Guy Murray Bruce.
The ensemble cast features Odunlade Adekola, Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Bimbo Ademoye, Omowunmi Dada, Shaffy Bello, Bisola Aiyeola, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Tina Mba, Daniel Effiong, Femi Branch, Rotimi Fakunle, Bolaji Ogunmola, Bukunmi Adeaga Ilori, and Constance Olatunde.
This project follows an earlier screen plan announced in June 2020 for a Netflix commissioned series. The novel was previously adapted for the London stage by Rotimi Babatunde in 2018 and has been published in multiple languages including Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Turkish.
